New Hanover County Divorce Records
New Hanover County divorce records are official court documents created when a couple files for a divorce and the court finalizes the case. In North Carolina, the state trial courts (usually the District Court) handle divorces. The Clerk of Superior Court maintains the official files of these court proceedings in the county where the divorce is granted. These records help track the case and the court’s final decision, especially the divorce judgment (decree).
In general, North Carolina court records are open to the public unless a law restricts access. However, some related family law records (such as adoptions) are confidential and sealed. For an authorized person, a divorce record may include the names of the parties. If you are an authorized requester, a divorce file may include the parties’ names, a case number, filing and finalization dates, motions and orders, and the final divorce decree or judgment.
Eligible parties may obtain copies of divorce judgments from the clerk of the court’s office in the county where the divorce was granted (for a fee).
